Nez Perce Toy Cradle

Nez Perce Toy Cradle

Circa 1880–1890

Hide-Wrapped Wooden Frame

Cradleboards were integral to infant care among the Nez Perce and other Plateau peoples. They secured infants in an upright position while allowing caregivers to remain mobile.

This miniature cradle reflects the structural features of full-sized examples, including a rigid back support and protective hood. Beadwork on the upper panel demonstrates classic Nez Perce design symmetry and color balance.

Remnants of red stroud cloth on the hood edges indicate participation in trade networks during the late nineteenth century. The original front lacing remains intact, reflecting accurate construction techniques.

Toy cradles functioned as educational objects, introducing children to caregiving roles and reinforcing community-centered values.
