The Ranch
A Legacy of Land
Stretching across 580 acres in the Upper Elk River, surrounded by rugged nature as far as the eye can see, you’ll find The Home Ranch’s historic homestead. Here, gracefully undulating grassy hills are dotted with cattle and horses, creating an idyllic scene of Western ranch life — one that the Stranahan family sought to preserve from the very start. Since The Home Ranch’s establishment in 1980, the Stranahan family and his neighboring ranchers worked to place over 8,000 acres of this breathtaking valley into a permanent conservation easement, preserving the land’s rich heritage for generations to come.
Even when, shortly after, the land changed hands, that mission of conservation remained the same. Now under the new ownership of the McFarlane family, The Home Ranch is building on that heritage while ushering in a new era of ranching by championing holistic practices like rotational grazing and horseback herding. This ecologically friendly approach fosters a symbiotic relationship between the land and the animals that walk, feed, and live on it — ensuring that The Home Ranch continues its extraordinary legacy.

The Farm at The Home Ranch
Sitting at an altitude of 7,200 feet, our high-country farm isn’t the easiest place to wield a green thumb, but that’s exactly what our farm team does day in and day out. To feed the North Routt community and its visitors, we grow a variety of seasonal produce on our complex of gardens and orchards. Not only do we get to offer the freshest bounty around, we also plant tropical and Mediterranean plants like citrus and figs in our eco-friendly alpine greenhouse, which makes all-weather farming possible — even during harsh, unforgiving winters.
