The New Home Ranch Horse Program

Visioneering The Best New Performance and Ranch Horse Program in The West

When Scott McFarlane purchased the Home Ranch in the summer of 2020, he planned to transform the iconic Colorado property into a working cattle operation and a private family compound. But, true to McFarlane traditionβ€”Β his father Willis was the legendary businessman behind one of the world’s largest hotel management chains (AIRCOA) and the Denver Buffalo CompanyΒ β€” the project quickly evolved into a much bigger endeavor: Scott and his daughter Courtney are now building an equine program that will produce some of the top ranch and performance cow horses in the country. This is the story of their master vision, the talented and driven team of trainers and wranglers they’ve built, and the horses they will be training, using on the ranch, and eventually selling to ranches like yours.Β

The McFarlane family is thrilled to welcome Gusti Buerger to the Home Ranch team. Gusti, a rising star in the reined cow horse world, will be leading the new Home Ranch Performance Horses program. The Colorado native returns to her home state after 15 years training in Texas, Wyoming, Idaho, and Arizona with some of the biggest names in the National Reined Cow Horse Association. Gusti is a fierce competitor who is devoted to the cow horse disciplines and, even more so, to her equine partners.

The Ranch Horse Program

When the McFarlane family began to transition Home Ranch to a working ranch, finding the right horses was an obvious priority. Ranch horses need to have diverse skill sets to push herds of cattle, sort first-time heifers during calving season, or simply walk fence lines alone checking for damage. They should be the right balance of sturdy enough to handle long days in the wilds and the elements, yet athletic and agile enough to perform with precision. And, of course, they need to keep a level head while doing it. That’s the kind of ranch horses Ranch Manager Michael Moon will be developing in concert with Gusti Buerger.Β

While the ranch is not currently open to the public, the Home Ranch horses, horsemanship, and holistic range management program is currently undergoing a robust renewal under the ranch management of Michael Moon and his team of excellent wranglers and ranch hands.

History and Vision

The livestock business isn’t new to the McFarlane family. You might even say it’s a proud family tradition that begins with Scott’s father Will McFarlane. “Buffalo Will” founded the Denver Buffalo Company back in 1991 and was one of the first ranchers to introduce Coloradans to home grown bison meat; at one point he raised 2,500 head on his 14,000-acre Elbert County ranch. And thanks to his passion, both his children and grandchildren grew up on the family ranches, riding horses and reveling in the grandeur of the Rockies. Although those original properties are no longer in the McFarlane family, their legacy was something Scott wanted to pass on to his own daughters’ children.
